Acts 1: 3-5
3 During the forty days after he suffered and died, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God. 4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 1: 8-9
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After saying this, he was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him.

Acts 2: 1-8
1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?

Wind & Fire

Moses and the law

• There was a loud noise.
• A cloud descended.
• There was fire
• God wrote his law on tablets of stone
• And 3,000 people died.

Day of Pentecost

• There was a loud noise
• The cloud of the spirit fell
• There was fire
• God wrote his law on men’s hearts
• And 3,000 people were saved

The Holy Spirit will convict you

John 16:8
8 And when he comes, he will [convict] the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment.

Conviction = Protection

The Holy Spirit will counsel you

John 14:26
26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 14:16-17a
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever - the Spirit of truth.

Parakletos (παράκλητος): “called to one’s side” - to one’s aid

The Holy Spirit will comfort you

John 14:1
Do not let your hearts be troubled….

John 16
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Will I have trouble?
Where will I find comfort?

This world is [deceiving]: You need God’s [conviction]
This world is [confusing]: You need God’s [counsel]
This would is [hurting]: You need God’s [comfort]
