A Note From Brandy Knutson ~ Rooted & Connected
Recently, I was repotting some of my houseplants—a hobby I picked up during COVID. Any plant I owned before that was pretty much doomed. I’ve always been a bit of a nerd about trees—not because I know much about growing them, but because I love the metaphorical imagery they offer. Over time, that love for trees expanded to include houseplants, and most specifically, their roots.
If you’ve ever pulled a weed or replanted a flower, you’ve probably seen the intricate network of roots hidden beneath the surface. Though unseen, roots are essential—they anchor the plant, draw up nourishment, and even connect with neighboring plants through underground systems to share resources and provide support.
In many ways, our lives of faith mirror this. Just as a tree needs strong roots to withstand storms, we need deep spiritual roots to stand firm in seasons of hardship, change, or uncertainty. When we remain rooted in God’s truth, we draw life and strength from Him—and we grow stronger through our connection with the Holy Spirit.
Just as tree roots connect beneath the surface to share what’s needed, prayer connects us to the very heart of God. The Holy Spirit is always present, always near, offering wisdom, comfort, and even interceding on our behalf. Prayer isn’t just something we do—it’s a lifeline to the One who nourishes and sustains us.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking prayer needs to be polished or perfect, but the Holy Spirit meets us in our honesty. Whether it’s a whispered plea, a deep grief or lament, a wordless sigh, or joyful praise, our rootedness in prayer draws us closer to God and strengthens our spiritual foundation.
“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” —Colossians 2:7 (NLT)
If you’re feeling weary or unsteady, take heart—you are not alone. The Holy Spirit is as close as your next breath, ready to meet you in the moment. No matter your emotions or circumstances, that space can become a sacred connection point. As Jeremy mentioned in his message on Sunday, you can engage with God through silence, Scripture, worship music, or lyrics that reflect your heart. The goal is simple: connection—with God, through the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
My encouragement to you this week:
Set aside a few quiet moments to pray—whether through spoken words, journaling, or silence. Ask the Holy Spirit to root you deeper in God’s love and to bring someone to mind you can lift up in prayer. There is power in even the simplest connection.
